Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a qualified electrician for all electrical work?
Not for all jobs. Simple like-for-like replacements (e.g. swapping a light switch) can be done by a competent DIYer. However, new circuits, consumer unit work, and anything in bathrooms or outdoors (Part P notifiable work) must be done by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme.
What British Standards apply to domestic electrical installations?
BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations, 18th Edition as amended) is the primary standard. BS 1363 covers plugs and sockets. BS EN 60669 covers switches. BS 5839 covers fire detection and alarm systems. Our product pages reference the relevant standards for each item.
