What Is a Metal Clad Socket, and How Is It Different?

A metal clad accessory is the same electrical device as a normal one, wrapped in a tougher shell. You get a galvanised steel faceplate on a steel back box, either surface mounted straight onto a block or brick wall, or flush mounted in a metal box. The 13A socket inside still conforms to BS 1363, and the switch mechanism still conforms to BS EN 60669. What changes is the housing.

Plastic is fine until something hits it. Steel takes the hit and carries on. That's the whole point. White moulded is the right call for a finished bedroom or a hotel corridor. In a working garage it's a false economy, because the first trolley that clips it puts a crack across the faceplate, and now you've got exposed terminals and a callback.

Think about mechanical stress, not looks. Anywhere accessories get knocked, scraped or worked hard is a candidate.

Here's the price reality check. A basic metal clad double is a few pounds more than a white moulded one. Step up to an RCD-protected metal clad socket, such as the BG MC522ARCD at around £29, and you're paying closer to £30, because you're buying shock protection as well as impact resistance. In a workshop that pays for itself the first time a trolley clips it and the plate doesn't shatter, or the first time the RCD trips instead of someone getting a shock. Do the Regulations Require Metal Clad Anywhere?

BS 7671 never says "use metal clad" by name. What it says is that every accessory must be suitable for the external influences of its location. Mechanical impact is one of those influences, and in areas of higher impact risk you're expected to select equipment with adequate resistance. In plain terms: if the spot takes knocks, the accessory has to cope, and a plastic plate often doesn't.

So the compliant move in a busy commercial garage in Leeds isn't a white plate that meets the minimum on paper. It's an accessory with an impact rating that matches the room. Metal clad gives you that, while still carrying the BS 1363 and BS EN 60669 approvals the socket and switch need. Check the IK rating on the product for the exact impact energy it's built to take.
