Why a bathroom gets a pull-cord at all

The pull-cord is not a style choice, it is a rule of the room. A bathroom is divided into electrical zones based on how close things are to the bath or shower, and standard switches and sockets are not permitted inside those zones because wet hands and mains switches do not mix. A pull-cord solves this because the switch mechanism sits safely up in the ceiling and the user operates it with an insulating cord, with no live parts within reach. The mistake that starts fires A 6A pull-cord is a lighting switch. Put it on a shower circuit drawing 40A or more and the contacts cannot carry the current, so they overheat, discolour and eventually fail, sometimes on fire. The rating on the switch is not a guideline, it is the maximum current the contacts can safely break.

Matching the rating to the job

There are really two families of ceiling pull-cord. The low-rated ones handle lighting and fans, and the high-rated double-pole ones isolate a shower. Getting this right is simply a matter of reading the load.

For a shower, the double-pole part matters. An anti-microbial moulded base is common on bathroom switches and is a sensible choice in a wet, shared room. And the fixing matters more than people expect: shower pull-cords are surface-mounted to a pattress, so check the base shape suits the box, since a mismatch is a common source of a poor fit.

One maintenance note worth passing on. A frequent cause of a pull-cord failing early is dust and debris falling from the ceiling void into the mechanism through the cable entry. Sealing that entry point at the ceiling keeps the switch working for years rather than months. Adding or altering a shower circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so factor that into the job as well.

Lighting pull-cords: the simpler end

Not every pull-cord is a shower isolator. For a bathroom light or an extractor fan, a 6A ceiling switch is the correct and inexpensive choice, available one-way or two-way and in moulded white or metal finishes to match the rest of the BG light switch range. Keep the two jobs clearly separate: a 6A for the light and fan, a 45A or 50A double-pole for the shower, and no crossover between them.
