BS 7671 requires that every isolator and switching device be clearly identified so its function is obvious, particularly where incorrect operation could cause danger or inconvenience. It doesn't mandate the word "engraved" specifically, but the intent is exactly what engraving delivers: identification a competent person, and a lay occupant, can rely on without guesswork.
